There is a land suspended between Campania and Lazio, on the slopes of the ancient volcano of Roccamonfina, where time seems to have preserved the deep traces of an archaic world. The Toraglie are a constellation of small rural hamlets where, for generations, singing accompanied work in the fields, celebrations, acts of devotion, births, and the daily hardships of a farming community living among olive groves and chestnut forests. It is a fragile oral heritage, now threatened by the disappearance of many traditional activities and the gradual loss of collective memory.
From this world comes Voci dalle Toraglie (Voices from the Toraglie), the new album by Le Ficufresche, released on June 2 in both physical and digital formats via Liburia Records, with distribution by Xango Music and Galileo Music Communication.
The duo, formed by Maura Sciullo and Immacolata Argiento, has been engaged in extensive field research since the early 2000s, seeking out the last elderly women who still hold this precious body of traditional knowledge. Going from house to house, across villages, washhouses, small squares, church stairways, and bedrooms filled with old family photographs, Le Ficufresche collected songs, stories, breaths, and memories, rescuing them from oblivion through recordings made over many years and in many different places.
Voci dalle Toraglie is, in fact, a collection of sound recordings "captured" over time: living testimonies that the duo has chosen to bring back to life through their own voices, alternating faithful performances of the collected material with personal reinterpretations. The album also includes several original field recordings, allowing listeners to hear the voices of the elderly women who were at the heart of this research.
The repertoire reflects the many roles music once played in women's lives: work songs, stornelli (improvised folk verses), lullabies, teasing songs, ritual songs, and devotional chants. This research adds an important new chapter to the ethnomusicological mapping of Campania, shedding light on an area that has remained largely unexplored until now.
The duo's vocal approach is rooted in the awareness that their voices are born from the silence of the mountain, where human singing becomes part of the landscape's natural polyphony: the wind moving through the leaves, the calls of animals, and the breathing of the earth itself.
The name Le Ficufresche comes from the Cantata dei Mesi (Song of the Months), an ancient Carnival song in which each month is represented allegorically through the rhythms of the natural calendar and the fruits offered by the land. "Every year we pick fresh figs from the trees—trees that may well have heard those songs themselves—then dry them and eat them at Christmas," they explain.
The artistic identity and vision of the project were developed by Le Ficufresche together with Davide Della Monica. Cristiano Della Monica handled most of the recording sessions and was responsible for the artistic production of Carminella, Maronna mia Maronna, Metti na fava, and Vendemmia, while Francesco Di Cristofaro produced Canto alle Ulive.
The album was recorded and mixed by Cristiano and Davide Della Monica, with mastering by Gianni Roma. The cover photograph was taken by Davide Della Monica.
Guest musicians featured on the album include Guidonia Caliendo (vocals), Gianluca Fusco (diatonic accordion), and Francesco Di Cristofaro (double flutes).
